Training Bursaries and Scholarships
Department for Education Financial Incentives for ITT courses starting Sept 2024
You may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship if your teacher training course leads to qualified teacher status (QTS). These are tax-free amounts of money you receive to train in certain subjects. You do not need to pay them back.
The DfE are offering tax-free bursaries of £28,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics, and physics. Scholarships worth £30,000 tax-free will be offered in partnership with professional bodies for chemistry, computing, mathematics, and physics. A languages scholarship worth £27,000 tax-free will be available in French, German and Spanish.
The DfE are also offering a £25,000 tax-free bursary for biology, design & technology, geography and languages (including ancient languages). £10,000 tax-free bursaries will be available in English, and they are reintroducing £10,000 tax-free bursaries in art & design, music and RE.
Your bursary or scholarship will be paid in a minimum of 10 equal monthly instalments over the duration of your course by your teacher training provider.
If you’re a non-UK citizen without indefinite leave to remain in the UK(opens in new window), you will not usually be eligible for a bursary or scholarship, unless you train to teach languages or physics. Find out more about funding for non-UK citizens.

Physics Teacher Training Scholarships are now open!
The IOP is awarding 175 scholarships to high-calibre individuals who are passionate about embarking on a rewarding career in physics teaching. The next application deadline is on Monday 8 January 2024, with further monthly deadlines announced until July 2024.
